Tamegroute Pot Insect Repellent Citronella and Peppermint Candle

These exquisitely scented candles in traditional Tamegroute pots are a collaboration between Francesca Giomarelli and BE. We sourced the pots on a trip to the desert in Morocco and then Francesca filled them with this all natural insect busting scented candle. They will make a lovely gift for anyone who loves evenings out in the garden and for the bbq king in your life!

Tamegroute has a long history in pot making and we were lucky to visit during a week long trip to M'Hamid, Zagora for a trek into the deep desert and camping under the stars.

Tamegroute is about an hour from the gateway to the desert and about 7 hours from Marrakech although huge work is going on to build a better road and make the journey easier. Along the Draa Valley there are kilometre after kilometre of palm trees lining the riverbed and this is where the clay for the pots is collected. The workers dig deep to collect the clay which is then taken to Tamegroute where is is worked entirely by hand to create all the pottery. The traditional potters sit with their legs underground and work the clay at ground level. In the baking hot weather this affords some coolness from underground.

Once the pots are completed, they are stacked on special stands to maximise the amount of pottery that can be put in the wood fired kilns.

The glaze is a closely guarded secret from generations ago and contains manganese, silica, cobalt, copper, and barley flour. The ovens are carefully watched and when the pieces have been fired it is amazing to see how different each piece is.

The pieces have distinctly different rustic finishes and an irridescence on many pieces. The true magic and defining feature of this Tamegroute pottery is the scars that can be seen on each piece - sometimes thought to be imperfections. It is in fact where the stacking devices leave tiny marks where the glaze has not covered. Not imperfections at all,  more the symbol of true Tamegroute pottery.

You will frequently see pottery being sold as traditional Tamegroute but it is easy to see that the colours are not the same, the texture different and the pieces devoid of the classic scars.

We work with Nourredine who is in charge of one of the cooperatives and will happily show you around if you are ever passing through.
